How To

Is Your Bass Fishing Reel TOO FAST?!?

This is going to sounds CRAZY, but the line pickup (a function of gear ratio and spool size) has to be just right to get the right action and the right bend in the rod for maximum feel when fishing a swimbait. A reel that’s too fast (has a gear ratio that’s too high) is easy to overwork the bait and kill the action, even if you slow down, you may be moving the line at the same rate, but for Justin Lucas, it just doesn’t feel right. The right reel (a reel with the right gear ratio and spool size) allows you to impart the right action and occasional pause to trigger strikes.

  1. How does cranking a faster reel slowly make a difference in pressure applied to your rod tip. It's what your used to. Your used to burning a slow reel to make your lure swim how you like it. I can barely run a 7.5 to 1 and keep pressure on my rod tip and I can even pop my bait. It's what you're used to.

  2. I prefer a 6.4:1 for a cranking retrieve. Most guys don't realize that the more line you pick up, the faster you're retrieve gets because that spool is getting bigger and bigger. So if you're burning that bait at the beginning and it feels a bit sluggish, that's why.

  3. I have experienced this as well, it seems like crazy talk just like Justin said but it makes all the difference for me. I don't know how guys can use the high speed reels and get good feel and pace on the moving baits.
