  1. Randy, we've fished together, and I think you're a Rockstar. Your contribution to the sport has been awesome and I enjoy your videos.
When I started kayak fishing, I was in a sit in Walmart kayak with paddle. Killed my back. Went to a better sit on with pedals.
Then I upgraded to an unlimited with an Xi3 with spotlock. Any body that has ever kayak fished can attest to even 15 mph winds pushing us 300 yards down the bank or in to the bank when we are measuring fish. I've seen comments on using a mushroom anchor… cool man, use it. I chose to save money and buy what makes my fishing experience more comfortable and productive.
Want to be a kayak minimalist? Cool. Fish tournaments, but don't use others rigs as an excuse to forgive a shitty tourney result or ten.

  2. As someone who helps run a kayak tournament organization there are some key things you aren't considering. First off, kayak fishing isn't tournament kayak fishing. Kayak tournaments are designed to be as similar as possible to bass boat tournaments. In high populated areas, not everyone has a garage or space to store a 21 foot bass boat. Yet, they still want to compete, have spot lock capabilities to combat wind in a tournament or be able to cover water without constantly using their hands to propel their kayak. You know better than most being efficient on the water is very key to being successful in a tournament. Also, there are several older gentleman who tournament kayak fish in our organization and they wouldn't be able to physically compete if it wasn't for the aid of a motor. Kayak bass fishing is about inclusion rather than exclusion, and allows more people than ever to competitively bass fish. With that being said, anglers need to be very cognitive of the weight capacity of their kayak and how much weight they add. If you go over weight capacity your kayak becomes unstable and can easily lead to you flipping your kayak.

  3. I have fished both bass boat and kayak! I had the 21ft boat with the 250hp and left if more the simpler kayak world. Now it’s invading it too! Pedal drives are fine as you still need to carry a paddle for ultra shallow or weedy areas. I have one 2d graph a Dragonfly 2 just enough to see the bottom and fish structure. I’ve seen 20,000 dollar yak and trailer combos that rival any low cost bass boat🤷‍♂️😭 it’s not long before we do hit 30k! I’m sure there are carbon fiber hulled yaks coming soon🧐Not what kayaking was intended to be, my 2cents✌️

  4. Amen brother…. Keep up the good work Randy…..former boat owner and long time kayak fisherman here, sorry for waxing poetically below…… been fishing in a Kayak since before it was "cool".. started back in my Army days (2006)… long story short… I only started fishing Kayak tournaments in 2021 due to pandemic boredom …. i argue at its purest form, you should be able to carry your kayak at least a short distance to launch in "small water" and fish were boats cannot fish… with my kayak, I spent years fishing shallow water, small creeks and going miles up river arms… no need for electronics… just good ole sight fishing and stealth approach in feet to inches of water… amazing experience… now.. opposite end of the spectrum, Kayak Bass tournaments, i was shocked when i first started tournament fishing in 2021, all the Dudes/Dudettes/Dudethems fishing the tournament had to use trucks and trailers to launch their kayaks, in addiditon to having 2 and 3 TV screens of electronics, 1 and often 2 trolling motors, elevated rotating seats, spot lock, FFS, side-imaging… ect.. you get the picture… they fish like boats, not kayaks, at the tournaments, i have the shallow water, far up creeks and inside edge of weed lines all to my self because darn near every other kayak in the tournaments cannot get up shallow, they fish the lake like a boat….. like you said Randy, the spirt of Kayak fishing does not exist in Kayak Bass Tournaments… but, in 3 years of fishing about two dozen events without Tech and using shallow techniques, i have been in the money twice… not bad for a grumppy ole Army vet…. but yes, FFS wins darn near everytime and they all say they were they only kayak out on a main lake adventure with a bunch of boats around them all using FFS… good for them, but that is not kayak fishing, that is using a kayak to fish like a boat… my grumppy ole man thoughts

  5. I fish a kayak. I used to have a boat.
I have no electronics and paddle. I can access dock areas better but it sucks in the wind.
I've thought about buying something like a cheap sonar just so I can see the bottom.
But I've seen those guys with the forward facing sonars. what a joke! I think those people are more into electric gadgets than fishing.

  6. As a bank fisherman, technology is a nonfactor, that's my whole point of enjoying the outdoors, getting away from screens and making my experience natural and wholly about nature. So grateful for your time & perspective Randy.

  7. I fish out of a kayak. I have a cast able 2d sonar that I use mostly for mapping the bottom of the lake where I fish. I turn it off while fishing most of the time because for me stealth makes a big difference. Some of the bites I get are almost directly under me in 10' of water. I feel like using ffs or any sonar on a kayak has a good chance of spooking fish. They hear the clicking just like we do. Probably even more.

  8. I am one of those kayak angler comments and I’m glad to see you making a video about it. I view kayak angling as the last bastion of pure bass fishing and something that should be primitive. I hate the direction the sport is going. Like everything it is being dominated by money.

  9. I have a bonafide ss127 with a motor guide gps trolling motor and a simple fish finder. This is now way close to 10 000$ sounds like you are trying to make fishing socialist. Why are you so concerned about how others fish. Mind your own fishing not others. Just an opinion. Peace out be safe

  10. Randy is 100% correct. What's next? Allowing nets so you can just locate the fish, then whack it on the head so it can't swim off when you approach it with a net? This isn't fishing anymore…at best, it's hunting. It's emotionally stunted children, with strangely unlimited financial means, who grew up with cell phones, playing around with fishing. I'm looking down through these comments, and it's full of people that don't get it, and that's being nice about it. If you're complaining that, you HAD to purchase this technology, or you wouldn't have been able to compete, then YOU are the problem.

I don't blame you for purchasing the technology to compete, especially if that's how you pay your bills… I blame you for not raising hell with the people who allow it in the first place. How would you feel, as proven fisherman, with the natural ability to compete, and you COULDN'T afford this technology??? Then what would your argument be?

It's NOT about you being "forced" to purchase this technology. I's about the fact that it's allowed at all.

  11. I just started fishing this last year. I remain fishing because I had a kayak, and am able to compete without owning a boat. I love it.

It seems like placing in the top 10 is a far fetched dream because of the video you made here. Especially when I'm stuck using an inboard kayak with a couple poles. And these guys have $30k rigs.

But I'll remain to do it because of the romantic part of kayak fishing you described. I can get into places with a kayak that a boat won't reach. And it's MUCH cheaper which is applicable for raising a family

  12. As a Kayak Angler (non competitive) I dont use any electronics. I paddle and I fish the way my grandfather taught me. Spotlighting fish is nothing but greedy, impatient, and childish. FFS users are hitting the water with a mindset that they are entitled to catch fish just because they chose to put a boat in the water. That isnt fishing.

  13. I like the idea of kayak fishing, but I doubt I will ever do it. Kayaks are just to small for me. They are not wide enough for me to stand up and move around without the problem of flipping over. If you flip your kayak, all your gear ends up at the bottom of the lake. I will stick to watching others fish from a kayak.

  14. Hey randy I have said this before I do kayak tournaments in Ohio and I absolutely agree , there is no room for electronics and motors on kayaks , might as well buy a boat ! I have no electronics motors or even a pedal drive just a paddle and do just fine !
