Bass Fishing With Finesse Swimbaits – Fall Transition

Small swimbaits are great for catching numbers of bass! In early Fall the big bass school up with smaller fish and the finesse swimbait is a great way to get big bites from giant bass that wouldn’t normally eat such a small meal. If you’ve got baitfish in your lake, you’re probably missing out on a fantastic finesse swimbait bite right now!

Unlike their larger cousins, finesse swimbaits can be fished on standard tackle. Depending on the size of the head you choose they can be fishing on anything from a light spinning rod to a heavy jig rod. The concept is the same as throwing big swimbaits but you’re much more likely to get steady action throughout the day.

The key to small swimbaits is to match the size of baitfish in your lake. If you’re seeing the bass chase tiny minnows, don’t be afraid to drop down to a little 2.8 keitech. If big baitfish are present, upsize your offering to match. Below is a breakdown of some of our favorite heads for different size swimbaits.

  1. Anyone who doesn’t throw a kietech has never went out and just smashed em on it yet! First few packs I ever bought I caught so many fish I ran out of baits and that was the only thing that would get bit. Now I keep about a dozen packs at all times and use them for everything

  2. Oh wow I saw the Flashy Swimmer (I glanced at it) at Bass Pro last week and didn't even consider it because I have a lot of underspins, underspins that get hung up on the trashy bottoms of the waters I fish. Now I see it is weedless which is exactly what I need. I'll be on my way to Bass Pro again this week. Anyway, Thanks again Matt for a great video.

  3. Best Bass channel on YouTube. You guys are informative above all else. You do well enough promoting your sponsors without shoving them down our throats and I have the utmost respect for that. I look up tons of fishing videos while on break at work, even topics on things that I believe I might even excel at and you guys always have some neat tips and tricks to help get an extra bite. Keep it up guys 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  4. Awesome video, i put on my Matt Allen swimbait head last night and caught a nice Largemouth in local lake from the bank. A question I continue to struggle to understand is weight…there are so many different weights for these weedless hooks and swim bait heads. When to use one vs the other and why would be a fantastic video to see

  5. 1st, by far best informational channel that gives tactics n techniques that are proven catchers without leaving out the small details that make any technique the performers u discuss. So thank u for not keeping most pertinent info out.

Had a ques regarding underspins or smaller swimbaits in general. I know u like switching up heads to switch action or the way ur plastic moves. Without the ability to always have multiple rods on me to have different action heads on each, what’s ur impressions on just switching plastics on the same head. The 2 I’ve found to have the most opposite actions with same head are keitechs vs Little Dipper. Keitech as u know u get heavy tail kick at any speed but not much roll where ur dipper u get a ton of body roll but not much tail kick. Have u found the same thing when fishing these 2 baits? Do u have a suggestion of another plastic that may be some where in between? Thanks for any help and keep up the quality videos. Even us guys that have fished for yrs can still learn from ur videos and why I follow and watch. If ur not learning ur not moving forward.

  6. Reel as slow as humanly possible at first. If you aren't getting bites change speeds, or fish it like a Texas Rig. I'm convinced that if there are bass in a body of water and you have a finesse swimbait you will catch them if you keep trying and switching up retrieves. I think of a small swimbait the same way I think about a wacky rigged stick bait, drop shot, or a ned rig. Flat out fish catchers when nothing else will work.

  7. love swimbaits… my issue it the Kietechs are not durable at all, Bass here tear em in half or ruin em on one strike. Other brands seem to last me much longer or land more fish before needing replaced.
    Great Vid as usual !!

  8. Matt Allen 1/8 Swim bait head on a Yamamoto Zako and a Dirty Jigs 1/4 finesse swim jig in dill pickle with chartreuse blue 3.8 keitech have been my go to setups and they always catch fish. Thank you so much for all the informative videos!

  9. HEY MATT AND TIM  I'M A CALI BOY BORN AND RAISED BUT JUST MOVED TO COLORADO IN APRIL 2018. I WATCHED THIS VIDEO LAST WEEK WENT OUT ON SATURDAY AND CAUGHT A DOZEN SMALLIES ON THE KEITECH BIG WAS 3.20. YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!!!

  10. Bought and tried everything in video (underspins, keitechs, little dippers, swim heads) and caught fish on everything. I couldnt of had a better day today… the only item I didnt get to toss was the war pig. Complete faith in tactical bassin advice. Thank you for an awsome day of fishing!

  11. I am a huge Owner fan and we just caught a ton of schooling bass on the flashy swimmer. Unfortunately all the flashy swimmers wound up in the trauma box once again and this morning I have to epoxy every one of them. Damn spotted bass are brutal! Once the Keel/Rutter comes totally loose the motionless blade just rides up against your bait 🙁

  12. I was up at Clearlake this last weekend..during the delta anglers tournament….the wind was terrible. Bite was terrible…for me at least. I drove 8 hours to get skunked for the weekend. I thought I’d never get skunked there…I blame the wind though…18mph ….only place we could fish without getting blown off our spot was in Konocti Bay by the old resort..

  13. Just started watching your channel this week and I'm hooked! Do you think I could get away throwing a 10inch swimbait like the megabass magdraft on 7ft medium heavy pole? It's the heaviest pole I have right now.

  14. Hey fellow anglers! I don't have a boat, so my fishing is limited to the bank at a few small ponds around where I live. Will the bass there have the same or similar patterns as the fish in big bodies of water during the transition?

  15. I gotta say you guys have stepped my swim bait game up big time. 2019 I’m signing up for the KBF series and I have been watching a lot of your videos in using hooks and hook sizes especially for soft baits. Keitech really is a go to bait for me when jigging or cranking even top water bites go slow. Been using them before I watched your videos but you guys just stepped it up a notch for me. Thanks TBSN

  16. Het Matt, thanks for the great info i keep them in mind. You’re right about the chartreuse-blue the Pike want them desperately aswel, i mean like it’s the last fish in my local pond. Keep up the great work,….creep and crawl right until winter time. Give us another hint when to swap to 6”-10” rubber.

  17. Great info. Easy to understand. Soft swim sits are fun I find that a drop of red nail polish on the blade up close to the head I get better action especially when slow rolling the bait.

  18. You guys do a fabulous job at sharing key information. I'm in Central Florida learning some key tips from you guys. Thanks for the videos.

  19. On your swimbait head that you designed is there a reason for that line tie not being 90 degrees? I have always looked for swimbait heads to have a 90 degree line tie. I’m not sure why it’s just what I have confidence in. Is there a reason to pick one over the other?
