Bass Champs Side Pot (Make it Make Sense)

I loved fishing Bass Champs last year and can’t wait for the first one of the year this year. When I heard rumors of a side pot I was even more excited because I love side pots and I think there is zero downside. This one however I cut wrap my brain around.

MY PROFILE:

I started fishing when I was just a young kid and instantly fell in love with Bass Fishing. Started fishing tournaments when I was in high school and have been fishing them ever since. For years I fished every tournament I could enter sometimes fishing as many as 45 tournaments a year. I qualified for the Elites when I was 30 but didn’t have the sponsors or money to compete so I turned it down. Got sponsor support later and fished the FLW Tour for 2 years and having been fishing the Toyotas since 2006. I’ve won 5 Angler of the Year Titles becoming the only fishermen to have more than 3 AOYs in the Toyota series. Won numerous events along the way that has helped shape my way into working for Strike King as head of product innovation. Along the way, I picked up a camera and started filming my endeavors.  I  have now fallen in love with making videos about fishing and delivering it to you. Follow along the journey…it should be an honest and fun ride!

  1. This is a weird way to do a side pot for sure. I can’t imagine any guys that are serious contenders will opt in, and guys that know they will struggle likely won’t either.

  2. Man that’s some everybody wins participation trophy weird BS there . Whole point of a tournament is your betting on yourself to win or do well. I feel you are correct in your feelings . Why reward those who don’t do well. ALS leaves room to sandbag to fix your weight as well . Just wait till near the end and if last in money currently is 15 lbs and you have 5 for 16 throw back a 2lber before weighing in and boom you get paid. I’d be starting my own real side pot and getting everyone in with cash and pay out too 10 only

  3. In pool and golf tournaments they have a Calcutta where you bid on who you think will win . It's customary to offer half to the person you "bought " .. .

What about auctioning off fishermen ????

  4. I hear what you’re saying, Todd. I think it’s an opportunity to win more money. If you think you’re gonna do,well in the tournament whenever you get in the side pots. That’s the reason I always get in the side pots because I think I’m gonna do well in the tournament anyway I might as well win extra money.

  5. Nobody would pay $100 side pot if you didn't have chance to win some back.
It would be good idea if some maybe 30% went to few more places out of the money. Tournaments are loosing anglers because some think they are just donating to the heavy hitters. To get more people in the field it might help to pay down to others. Sacrifice some to get more

  6. The Texas Fishing Forum is not the place to go for informed opinions. They do have lots of opinions though.

Yeah, once people understand how the proposed side pot works, nobody will participate. The good anglers won't because they know they won't get any of it, the average anglers won't because they still don't think they'll get any of it, and they will want to limit their costs.

  7. Todd, If I understood you correctly you are thinking other's get in side pots in the event they wouldn't do well in the tournament. Somewhat at the beginning you used the word gambling and that's the correct descriptive word because that's all fishing derbies are a form off gambling that's why every opportunity I had to get in a sidepot I entered because for me it meant Im increasing my opportunity to make more money 💰 🤑

  8. The problem is Todd they are loosing applicants due to the skill level of those fishing the trail. I mean let's face it there are some very good anglers in these events. I mean I have heard several of my customers talking about how they are just not on the same level and it was supposed to be for amateurs. At the end of the day my opinion is if you can't keep up go back to the ole drawing board. Practice, Bass Champs just isn't for the weekend angler anymore. Its seriously competitive and Those guys and gals are putting in their time to get where they are at the end of each season.

  9. Agree! Its weird. I also agree it's kinda weird when we find out how different we all think. I fish a lot of derbies where all side pot goes to first which I'm not a super fan of but I get it. Makes more sense than your situation

  10. So if Bass Champs wants to pay more spots they need to do that out of the original entry fee. And then use the side pot to get those top places back to where they want those payouts to be.

  11. Where’s the downside of this? If participation is down because guy’s have quit fishing these because they can’t get lucky. Well now there’s a little incentive for them to try again. You should like this because if more participate the top money goes up right? That’s what you’re complaining about, so here’s a possible fix.
