I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Kicking myself for not thinking of the Carolina rig option
Check out TexasEye jig heads, it's like a wobble head with a Texas rig type EWG hook. So you get a weedless swimbait. Also you can rig swimbaits on screw lock belly weighted hooks, with or without a spinner on the bottom. That's a nice weedless way to fish them too. The guys at Salt Strong make a bunch of videos with different ways to use their swimbaits (they have a YouTube channel and they have a club with services and products). They fish mostly in the saltwater but their tricks should work for bass.
I started using the wobble head for swimbaits last year. Since I fish it only in rock, I don't find it necessary to have the bait Texas rigged. The football head takes the brunt of the contact with cover and doesn't get hung up much. So I cut the stock hook off the head and put a split ring on and use a mustard grip pin hook or vmc finesse neko hook that both have a plastic keeper to keep the swimbait on but will give you an exposed hook for better hook up rates.
excellent video Matt, never thought to try it on Carolina rig
Vato rig, ewg hook with a lighter round eye dropshot weight , rocks and rolls hard, weedless, easy weight changes for fast or slow retrieve, big or small swimbaits.
Great idea on the wobble head! Caught a lot of bass at Lake of the Ozarks on a wobble head with a pit boss. I need to try a swimbait
Are you still using the double split rings on your wobble heads? I noticed you were using the standard wobble head in the video.
Split shot rig on a spinning rod
Hey Matt, have you tried them with your hover rig yet? I haven't been able to get out fishing yet, but this is one of the first things I thought of when I saw those jig heads.
Your channel has so much good information and you are really good at explaining things. Thank you so much
Fantastic tips!
I love keitech Style swimbait texas-rigged weightless. Through and above emergent vegetation topwater like a buzzbait. You want to talk about the absolute best way to catch numbers of fish in lily pads and other types of emergence cover. I'll definitely have to give a few of the other techniques a try
On what type of rod would you fish the wobble head?
Drop shot ! Yep. Discovered that this past fall into winter. Wasn’t able to fish treble bait or swim jig slow enough and keep it off the bottom. Tied up a drop shot and nose hooked a 3.3 swimbait. Turned into a great day of fishing and was my go to when I couldn’t produce a bite. …. Texas rig I also agree. When I have a tough day and lose 5+ jig heads I’ll switch to a Texas rig wiht a 3/16ths weight. Catches fish.
Crazy to me that a Texas rigged swim bait isn't known as common knowledge. I guess though, as a bank fisherman, that weedlessness is a must for me so I rig it like that automatically. And being able to keep it in hand like u mentioned, it's priceless when walking around a body of water fishing different areas. Maybe not so much the boat guys??
Love the swimbait. I use it on my ned rigs often as well. Great stuff Matt
I'm always interested in western swimbait rigs. I like to use a variety of them but my favorite(or most often used) is the cheburashka jig weights. I'm curious if this is at all used in the west and thoughts on it? I don't know it by another name. Maybe someone's used it before?
Tokyo rigged swimbait works great aswell
Matt, we fish nearly all our baits around my home town in South Africa as a weightless texas rig because of all the grass in our dams. I must say that my son and i are both teachers so we have a lot of access to small private farm dams, it is just a pity that most of them have LOTS of grass so you cannot fish with an exposed hook, except maybe a popper or other topwater baits. The positive of this is that we are very accurate with our casting in order to get the bait into the open spots on the dam. We are bank anglers about 90% of the time. We love your channel and it made us better anglers for sure, alongside Roland Martin, Randy Blaukat, Jacob Wheeler and some others. I hope you win the next tournament!! Tight lines!
We need some hover shots up here in Canada Matty!?
Awesome content on this one, I love using a Swimbait but have never thought of using it on a carolina rig, what have I been thinking, you are right about the wobblehead in the Ozarks, works very well!!!
I went out Friday with a friend and we had about 40 off of beds using a green Nemo rig and a rattletrap and a ned rig up in Pennsylvania… biggest was 5.4 and a few around 4…. Definitely moving up right now… lot of bucks on beds…
Awesome content today. My brain is on overload .you are quite a fishing guru !!
More four star juice. When is your next tournament?
That is funny I saw a new jdm swimbait for drop-shot that the bootail is facing up
Great info, I love to fish them texas rigged through timber.
Talk about imparting actions huh?
Those are really neat ways to rig a swimbait. My primary means is to take the skirt off a swim jig and use a 3.75 Rage Swimmer or Keitech and swim it through the thick veg. Comes through super clean and allows me a way to fish a finesse swimbait on my waters without getting gunked up on every cast.
Thanks Matt
Great video!! Awesome tips on different ways to use the swimbait!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Great video thanks for sharing.
🍺Happy Mother’s Day to your wife.👍 5:10am this morning. I casted a swim bait on a jig head toward the inside corner of a dock that sits on a main lake point that is built perpendicular to a concrete retaining wall that runs full length of this guys house. The cast hit the wall and fell into the water with zero splash. As soon as I started to reel. Fish on. 4 lb 10 ounce smallmouth🥳.It jumped out of the water 5 times. After netting the fish the hook came out very easy. The spawn is on in Washington state. 80’s all week😎.I have numerous beds to fish but it was way to windy today to sight fish them.
You got me .Gonna tighten up .Appreciate extra good video
Ok… your going to think this is crazy.. but i put a swimjig on a shakeyhead….. then come up the line with a dropshot with another bait….. i have hooked 2 at a time
I've been waiting for this video, thanks 🎉
You didn't mention the Neko rig, hmmmmm.
Informative 👍👍👍👍👍
You forgot to mention the Hover rig 😊
Which knot would you recommend for the Texas and C rigged options?
