The palomar is a good knot but it is the easiest to tie wrong. You can never let the layers twist over each other. That’s how you lose the strength. Just tie the fishin fool like Tyler showed us😉
I hate split rings
HATE them
I have both huge hands and huge fingers so at least 20% of the time no matter how careful I am or what I've tried I end up trying my knots on the wrong area of the split ring and I have to re-tie
I found and bought a new style of split rings that are flat sided ovals not round and where the split rings meet are on the longer flat side of the oval so by design your knot will not end up on the wrong area but with my huge fingers they are an SOB to put on
I will definitely give the Berkley snap-ons a try
And yes you are 100% correct about you must tie knots absolutely correctly
I use a Polymer knot on all hooks and on most baits for baits to long for a Polymer knot I use a Trilene knot I only ever use these two knots and I learned if ANYTHING out of the ordinary occurs while tying either knot and the knot doesn't look perfect or doesnt cinch down perfect or the line length immediately infont of the knot looks distorted I re-tie
And I sharpen all hooks on new baits and re-sharpen all hooks first time I use the bait or if using a single hook and if I snag and get the luer back I just re-sharpen
I found the best desined hook sharpeners on earth at Amazon that use dule parallel ceramic rods or dule parallel fine round files and the sharpeners look like credit cards but about 1/4 the size they have a lanyard hole and I use a clip on retractable key chain to keep them handy they sharpen the hook point perfectly everytime to a scarry sharp point
Unfortunately I forget who makes them
Great helpful info.
Watching your videos is always time well spent
Love these short videos. I don't always have time to watch the longer ones on BassFishingHQ. When it comes to tying line to a split ring, even if you avoid the gap, it can eventually work it's way into the gap after several cast. That's why I only use oval split rings.
Great video 📹 👍
Wet your knots or you just burned your line
One thing I have learned the hard way. Whenever I pick up a rod to use, or after each fish catch I like to grab the lure and the line up a foot or so and give it a tug. It is amazing how often a nick can cause your line to be compromised. That sinking feeling of a lure flying free into space or breaking off on a hookset can just suck the life out of your day.
The worst mistake you can make when tying on a lure….Is tying on a lure. Use a snap, or a TA clip. Only the tiniest of lures, flies, and tiny live bait hooks, need to be tied on, IMO. And don't even get me started on those stupid, weak ass loop knots.
Oval split rings are definitely the way to go snaps work too but you definitely have to buy good ones
I would add a 4th thing: Always leave an 1/8" tag end so that if you have any line/knot slip you don't come loose.
I want to talk about the worst thing… there are 3 really bad things.
Sounds like you don't really understand how to get your ideas across to someone else.
First thing you say is nonsense.
Ask kvd and Lee sisson about your split ring theory and they’ll tell you otherwise. Kvd always ties to the crotch and the reason is if the crotch is towards the bait it can cause the bait to track untrue. Lee sisson says the same thing and he built all of bagleys best crankbaits all tank tested .

Great tips!
Speed clip
I always remove the split rings from my crankbaits and just use a Berkley Cros-Lok Snap on my line. I have yet to lose a fish when fishing this way.
You just described all the little things I have been doing for the last 2 days. I'm so sick of hooks, split rings, knots and spooling.
I have 17 rods rigged to 100% perfection and tons of lures I have upgraded split rings and hooks.
Headed to OH Ivie day after tomorrow for 5 days. I dont accept failure of losing trophy fish well. If I dont get a hook in good thats fine. If I dont get the big bite Im ok with that too.
But failure of something thats within my control is unacceptable.
So every video you talk about Finn Fishing and that it’s name after your son but we have never meet the superstar himself….
Sharp hooks feel like they have pine sap on them. They immediately stick to you fingers. That’s how I judge a bait when I take it out of the package. God help you if you drop the bait on your pants or tennis shoes.
Best snaps anyone would recommend?
I don't know how you DON'T get your line in those circle split rings, even after tying away they always end up sliding in ha ha
Tyler, do you recommend replacing split rings with oval split rings on all hard baits? Thanks for all you do. Awesome channel.
Which hook sharpener ???? Dont see the link
I put a snap on, and clipped a whopper plopper to it, but my whopper plopper wouldn't ever spin right, it's nose was below the water. I thought it might have been my line, 30lb braid.. was it the braid, the snap, or just a bad whopper plopper??
Good simple tip to everyone buddy
Great info.. these ARE things we don't even notice till it's too late.. Thanks!!
All I can say, is once again, you put it out there! The remedy my problem was cross lock snap! My troubles went away and save time when it came to changing size and color
Get rid of split rings and start using snaps is what I have done and work's great
I always take the split ring off of all my baits, just so unnecessary
I use swivels for expediency of change, and I usually connect to the nose eyelet and remove those snap rings. I don't normally use polymer knots on crankbaits due to the step where you have to run the loop over the bait to the opposite side before you pull the knot tight. You mentioned test your hook points, that usually happens when I am running the bait through the loop. I've started using the jam knot since it did so well in your test video. What is your opinion of using swivels? I haven't noticed any problems with how the bait runs through the water. My only concern is how tough are they when it comes to landing a fish.
I remove all split rings and use a high quality snap.
What do you think about using speed clips?
Great tips
Good video. Especially with prespawn coming in! 😎👍🎣💪🔨🏆
I've only been bass fishing a few years, and I have never changed a treble hook . This season, I plan on using more treble hook baits. Have you ever done a video on HQ demonstrating changing of treble hooks? I don't think I've ever seen it done. Might be a cool video idea .
I know a fellow fisherman he more than a few times ran his line. through the guide stands ,just one of them always forgets his glasses!
Use a snap, problem solved. Gives the bait more action and I've never had one fail.
