The Cold Water Bass Fishing Trick Everyone Forgets!!

When Winter bass don’t want to bite, the Jerkbait is the deal! Long pauses and short snaps of the rod can get wary fish to commit. However, this time of year attention to detail is everything. From baits to hooks, and rod to line, you need your gear to be perfectly dialed to fully take advantage of a jerk bait’s potential.

Matt started out fishing a variety of Winter time baits. He threw crankbaits, blade baits, alabama rigs, and swimbaits. Right before he was going to call it quits he picked up the jerkbait and changed the course of his day. The subtle action of the jerkbait combined with long pauses was more than the bass could resist!

Below you’ll find links to the exact gear Matt was using. He’s included his favorite sizes and colors for the baits, as well as the exact rods and reels he was fishing with. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

  1. I have been fishing jerk baits a lot recently. 15 hours fishing of only using them. No bites. I fish ponds and small lakes. I use 110s and pointers. 5-15 second pauses. 39-41 degree water. Haven't caught a bass since December 6th, and I'm getting desperate. Any tips for me?

  2. Matt I feel for you my man a couple weekends ago I was striper fishing off my kayak throwing everything under the sun Adam and could not get bit literally sitting in a spaghetti bowl until I started throwing the tactical flex let it sink down to about 20 feet and started slow rolling it and almost every single cast I was pulling in 27in 30 in over slots and then I broke off that's such a crappy feeling knowing that you have a pattern dialed in with the potential of getting a record fish or trophy fish

  3. Have you guys ever been totally skunked where u fish from sun up to sun down and nothing happens to me all the time I have spent so much money just to not catch anything its getting old am probably gonna quit maybe just bank fish with this economy I can't even feed my self let alone fish can't even buy baits that may work then when I do go fishing I spend 12 hours just catch nothing I have a garbage lowrance hook reveal 7 and I see fish but never catch them

  4. Guys – my brother and I are Watts Bar bass fishing old guys going to California in May 23. We are getting a guide for Clear Lake. This is our first time to Clear Lake fishing there. Do you have a guide reco, do you have a part of lake reco, do you have a bait direction for May ( which impacts guide)

  5. I recently bought the Orochi Whipsnake with the Vanford 2500 for jerkbait fishing and love that setup! Goes with my Expride casting rod perfectly!! I've caught some nice ones on both the past few months!

  6. Oooh by the way, I guys R AWESOME!!! I just love watching ur videos!!! Great details and in depth in what’s happening n and around the water, top or bottom or n between!!! Awesome stufff!! Just love u guys!!!!❤

  7. Have you guys ever thought about adding some bloopers into the videos, maybe at the end. Everyone likes a good laugh. Love the videos and the knowledge/tips shared over the years. Keep up the good work 👊

  8. I need more clarification on why using a spinning set up. Bc of the lighter line? Why can’t you just spool a casting set up with the 12lb braid and 8lb leader?

  9. When you go out do you bring lots of just the specific tackle you think you’ll use? I was surprised you didn’t have more jerkbaits with you. I’m guessing a boat that size can hold like 30+ 3700s…I always have some of everything but maybe that’s because I don’t have 20 boxes of each thing…yet! 😂

  10. Watched the entire video and have more respect for your perseverance and I had plenty to start with. It shows your strong belief in tried and true ways to catch them under really adverse conditions proving once again, you are the man.

  11. Dang I can't wait for spring, I just bought a poison adrena today off marketplace from a kid, 220$ brand new!! Curado DC 151hg with gomexus power handle will be paired up nicely with it!!!

  12. Matt, how in the world are you finding clear enough water on Chick to catch them on a jerkbait ? I thought it was a mudhole after the recent weather. What gives?

  13. Matt,
I have owned the Ronin. Great rod for jerk baits, but a little short for other general finesse. Is there a new Destroyer (Landsat or Baby Plugging) that would work for 110 jr’s and still work as a multi-purpose rod for other light techniques?

  14. Im sorry but I cannot help but laugh. More jerkbaits than any store in my entire state and they are all left at home. That is just hilarious. Glad you still keep that stuff in your videos for the rest of us.

  15. Thanks Matt! Another great video. I’ve been resisting getting an A-rig, but I’m gonna try my first one using your tactical rig and setup. Also, I used your tactical crankbait during the fall when the fish were fat on shad. It was able to force a response even when there was tons of bait in the water. I had a beautiful spot just slam it. So much fun…
