Swim Jig Bass Fishing | Master the Basics for Spring Success

Moving baits like crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swim jigs are excellent lures for covering water when searching for active springtime bass. In today’s Wired2fish video, Bob takes to the Upper Mississippi River to discusses his favorite time, locations, and gear for fishing swims jigs in the spring.

For bass in northern latitudes, the prespawn period can extend well into April and even late May near the Canadian border. As in southern fisheries, extended warm fronts bring numbers of bass into shallow water for comfort (warmer temps) and feeding opportunities.

Swim jigs are ideal baits for combining grass and wood flats. Downey details how he fishes light swim jigs around residual cover like cattails and submerged grass. He also shares his go-to jig trailers and preferred rod setup for increasing both bites and hooking and landing percentages.

  1. I've caught em swimming my flipping jig in but never really throw a swim jig and just swim it. I'll throw a spinnerbait instead

  2. If anyone knows about trolling motors I could use some help. Last night my minn kota power center started melting. The panel inside the lid underneath the circuit board started melting and smelling like burning plastic. I wasn’t running the motor hard at all. Is it bad wiring? Can I fix it? Or is it unsafe to use?

  3. I love your guys’ videos. They are very helpful/informative. Thanks to your guys’ videos I had an excellent opener on our lake up north catching a dozen bass over 12” (Our lake is stunted with bass rarely exceeding 10”. This is because of the people who love dumping weed killer in the lakes and the lack of shoreline structure/spawning habitat. ) Keep up the great content👍
