How To

Swim Jig Basics for Spring Kayak Bass Fishing

Wired2fish’s McKeon Roberts is a diehard swim jig angler, especially in the spring when prespawn bass move shallow. He explains how to fish swim jigs around cover and in open water from his kayak; boat control is essential here. Roberts explains why he fishes into the wind and how to maintain optimal kayak position through continuous drive mode and the Spot-Lock function on his Minn Kota trolling motor.

While many moving baits work well during this period, a swim jig is an ideal search and bluegill-imitating lure. In this video, Roberts uses it to contact bass spread out across expansive flats, work it through shoreline wood, and target bass in isolated grass. He stresses imparting action to the bait by poping the rod, which is improved with a longer rod, and a high-speed reel spooled with straight braid.

  1. Always happy to eat my cereal and watch your fishing videos in the morning! Before my fishing adventures got out yesterday! And caught some decent wild trout in the middle of the city! And got my driving learner’s permit!
No fishing Mother’s Day weekend right now though😢

  2. OUTSTANDING VIDEO!!!! I truly enjoyed watching this video. Hope to see more of Keys doing this type of stuff. I jumped over to Paddle and Fin and watched them interview him. Appreciate the humility in his teaching and delivery of the information he put forth. Please feature him more often. I am 70 years old and set in my ways, it takes alot for a younger guy to impress me with his knowledge of fishing. Outstanding episode from Wire2Fish.

  3. Why does it have to be one or none? Let me answer that 1 for you it doesn't. You can use all 3 unless you plan on fishing just long enough to use one lure, Or you only have one rod but I'm willing to guess that you have at least 3 fishing runs so tie on all 3
