Punching for Big Bass – BUST THROUGH Mats!

Want to find the big bass during the hot summer months? Then you must learn to punch vegetation for hiding bass. During the hot summer months as water temps rise into the high seventies to mid-eighties, you can find the bigger bass under the many different kinds of weed canopies such as hyacinth, pennywort (marsh primrose), duckweed, moss beds and many aquarium grasses. Under these types of mats, the water temperature is five to six degrees cooler, especially if there is some current.

You need to learn exactly where the bass are in the water column by understanding how the root systems hang differently depending on the type of vegetation. Bass find these mats and live under them for months and are very territorial. Always look for the cleaner weeds with no dead vegetation as they produce more oxygen, attracting more bait and fish. When punching you need to be using the right kind of equipment like heavy rods and 65 to 80 lb. braided line! I also use 1 to 3oz Tungsten weights pegged down to the hook!

  1. I do not see the link taking me to the sight where it shows all of the equipment that you are using in this video on Punching, and the link taking me to the store to purchase it through your site. Thanks P.S. it would be nice if there was a link took me directly to a site with just only showing all of the equipment and baits used in this video, so I can quickly purchase the items. Thanks again!

  2. I see that you are using a G Loomis rod in this video. What model and part number is it. Does using a high quality $$ sensitive rod make a difference in this type of fishing. Thanks.

  3. Thanks Alan, that’s some great tips, didn’t use the double peg, but I will try it. I always fish Franks and Holland, so there the spots you showed with that type of grass I will definitely get in the mix of the grass.

  4. While punching I too have the grass problem with the ghost. I even have to take the prop off to clean the shaft. Any ideas on weedless that works like minn kota?
BTW nice vid with great tide/depth info.

  5. Alan, great video. Absolutely appreciate your knowledge and experience. Gives me some confidence to try and grab a punch fish. Came in and grabbed a couple of those SLX rods from ya last week. As always your shop has everything an angler needs to get them fish. I’ll keep watching and shopping.

  6. Thanks for the information! Great video! I do have one question. When punching, I tend lose a lot of fish. Any advice on how to have a greater hook-up and landing ratio?

  7. Alan, I notice you seem to use brush hogs pretty much for everything. Any other recommendations for punching as well as Texas rigs and colors for the delta. Great information as usual. Thanks.
