Welcome back to the channel!! We’re back on the pond punching and flipping for summer bass. The morning started off slow with no topwater action so I decided to see if they were tucked away in the tullies!

  1. Yo Z! Tie on some 17lb mono for a buzzbait. Mono floats and will help keep the buzzbait on the surface. Some guys throw braid on their buzzbaits, but I'm not a fan, it tangles to easy. Its totally natural for a buzz to run sideways. If you keep the rod tip high it will help it "keel up" so to speak. Also speed up and slow down the retrieve. This will make the bait "pulse" and change sounds. Not to mention it makes the blade spit water (that's a good thing)

When you do get a strike…pause for a split second, then set the hook. You want to feel tension before you swing. Kinda like a frog. As with all topwater baits you want some "Give" somewhere in your set up. Never use a stiff rod with braid, there is no "Give" in that set up (too stiff). The same is true for softer rods, never use mono in that set up (too soft..no hook set power).

The best set up (IMO) is a MH/Fast rod with mono. That rod has the perfect flex at the tip to absorb the shock and a good backbone for hook sets. The mono will also stretch, allowing for better hook up ratios. To stiff will pull it out of their mouth. Another thing I learned…"Never take your eyes off the bait"! A strike can happen at ANY second and you want to be ready….not looking at the sunrise…lol! Keep the drag lose enough for those strikes right at the boat (that will happen..lol)!

Megabass, Jamaica Boa is my favorite buzzbait. Pricey, but worth it! Oh yeah, add a keeper hook if your keeping the skirt set up. That will help with hook up ratios as well. Throw that buzzbait at the Delta next week if its in the rules (especially mornings). Parallel the weed lines or work them at a 45 degree angle. Also good around rock dams/walls. Good luck my man!

  2. Looks like they would have still ate topwater midday, just needed to be putting it back in the thick stuff. Maybe soft twitching a popping frog so it doesn't move too far would bring some out.

  3. Most people into buzzin without a skirt these days. try it with the skirt no trailer. It makes it lighter and you can fish it faster. Cover water and hit more targets. Efficiency.
