In this video I discuss the grand jury indictment in the fatal boat crash on Smith Lake that killed three striper fishermen, and injured two more, in April of 2025. Professional bass angler Flint Davis was fishing on Smith Lake when he collided with a group of fishermen that were striper fishing. A grand jury indicted Flint Davis with five felony charges that included manslaughter and felony assault. The Cullman County grand jury indicted Flint Davis in the deaths of Joe M. Broom, John “Kelly” Clark, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62. The indictment states that Davis was traveling 67 miles per hour when the collision happened and that he did “recklessly engage in conduct that which manifested extreme indifference to the value of human life and created a grave risk death.”

When stupidity goes wrong… It almost sounds like you, Mr. Melhorn, are making EXCUSES for this guy. Sorry, I have no sympathy for idiots in sixty thousand dollar bass boats flying around a lake with absolutely no respect for others. Keep him locked up a long time.
Speed played a great deal of importance in this case . And also there should have been speed limits and law enforcement on patrol being that it was a bass tournament. That law is suppose to protect and serve. Protect what or who ? People that are there abiding by the law with family and friends out to have a good time . And to serve as a protector of the public to stop accidents before it happens . So two things the guy shouldn't have been speeding and Law Enforcement should have been in place to stop him before it happened/ preventive if you will.
So I’ve been in speed limit areas and this simple grouped the boats together like the interstate. The solution here in my opinion is these Professional Tournaments should limit motor sizes to 60hp.
There's no way he was paying attention to his heading. I heard of this the day after it happened and heard all the weather factors that are obviously not true. Unforgivable tragedy and there is no justifiable excuse. The tournament itself is somewhat liable because of letting a fisherman on the water without the proper licenses. This is terrible and hard to watch
I love fast cars, fast cycles and fast boats. To race my cycle I go to a track, my car boss to drag racing track etc. So why can anybody who owns a fast boat can go as fast as they want on public lakes ?

SPEED DEFINITELY PLAYED A FACTOR IN THIS CRASH! Time to set speed limits for tournament anglers! PERIOD! May need to set a 2-person requirement for each boat for safety purposes also. I am sorry, but he deserves to have the "book" thrown at him for taking 3 people's lives! Boats don't have brakes like automobiles, so more care is required when operating a boat! I have operated various boats since I was a teen and have seen many dangerous things on the water. I tend to be EXTRA careful and mindful of other boats on the water. This is a tragedy that could have been avoided.

At minimum he shouldn't be allowed to plea bargain for anything less than 3 counts of negligent homicide & 2 counts of felony battery with a deadly weapon.
First off if you’re going 60+ miles an hour who is not white knuckle focus number one and secondly, when you’re going that fast how in the hell could they try to use the excuse that he was looking at another fisherman catching a fish on a different boat, your eyes are watering with sunglasses on going that fast and you were not able to see anything in detail, barely on your own boat let alone on another boat to evenacknowledge that he’s catching a fish that sounds like straight bull crap to me

These fishing tournaments ruin fishing for sport fishermen. There a joke and there is no reason for a fishing boat to be traveling at that speed.
Speed was a small factor. The person behind the wheel was huge factor. He had no boaters license. On the road if someone is driving a car without a license going 67 mph and run into a parked car with 5 people and killing 3 of them because you were driving distracted then you can blame speed but more blame is on the person driving a car without a license and not paying attention!
The sheer impact and the vessel to go full airborn due to speed were definitely contributing factors causing fatalities. Running at speeds up to 80mph where other vessels are present, to get to your fishing spot are just ego and "look at me" moments. Being a fast hot shot doesn't catch fish. Condolences to the victims families and friends who's lives will never be the same after this, as well as the survivors – wishing them all well. Not sure the type of injuries were suffered by the survivors, but they'll likely have psychoogical issues. Sorry, but not sorry for the 22-yo who caused this. Yeah, he'll probably do some jail/prison time, but he still has his life.

Maybe they should restrict the size of the motor or govern it to a top speed of all tournament fishing boats I know this will be unpopular but
Such a deadly, horrific accident that was avoidable if the driver simply paid attention to the basic sacred responsibility of steering the boat. The avoidance of the slaughter & massive loss of these precious lives appears so simple but unfortunately, far from it.

We definitely need much better enforcement of the rules of the water. It should be an expectation like it is with the rules of the road. While I see wild stuff on the road, on the water is total anarchy. It's absolutely terrifying as someone who primarily fishes from a kayak.
