Lighter is Better! 1 Ounce Bucktail and Light Rod Results in Stripers, Fluke and Weakfish!

As I’ve grown older, I’ve ironically found that sometimes the harder you make it on yourself when it comes to fishing, the more enjoyable the fishing is. Sure, we can use appropriately sized rods, reels, line and tackle when targeting our favorite species, but boy oh boy is it a LOT more fun when we downsize the gear.

In this video, I spent a few early morning hours in my local waters of Peconic Bay in Eastern Long Island and scored some nice bass, weakfish and fluke, all using my VRC Mongoose rod with 1 ounce bucktails.

  1. I use to really enjoy getting out fishing by myself. Nice trip John and those were some nice catches as well. On a side note, I would suggest that when fishing alone you never want to stand on the transome and fish! I don't care how calm it is either. One large unexpected wake will toss you overboard! You get the picture. Be safe out there! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸŸπŸŸ

  2. What a day with the weak fish and keeper fluke plus the stripers. Gotta love it on the boat by yourself too. Good technique I might try it I like the swing hook on that Bucktail. I was out there same day a little bit more West of you and had beautiful 23 inch weakfish plus one keeper fluke (south shore) + tons of porgies all on the Skinner jig and bounce 6.6 rod accurist combo
