I fish in the Kawartha chain of locks and darn . We have Fish-fish, Crappies, small mouth, large mouth, catfish muskeys and walleye. : deep 90 ft, weed beds, rocky out crops : sand holes, bottom springs, fast moving water.
Have a 16’ Lund DXL 25 Hp Yamaha, Minn Kota V2 55 lbs thrust ,with Pro Nav GPS. , Helx5 DI gen 2 fish finder.
Thank you so much
A roostertail, or any inline spinner, is simply a fantastic tool for catching a wide range of species. I have caught largemouth approaching 3 lb on them, and smallmouth, like you said, are drawn to them as well. I tend to do a slow-roll type retrieve though, as slow as possible while the blade will still turn. Great lure for beginners and experts alike
I don't claim to be good with lures but rooster tail is what I've had best success with.
Been catching bass on Rooster Tails since the mid 70’s. I was raised a wester stream trout fisherman starting in the 60’s and rooster tails were one of my main lures. Then I fished a small river with trout & largemouth and the largemouth ate them up! Had them in my tackle and boat ever since.
I finally started catching fish on these things on a high pressured local small lake, here in Southern Indiana!
The white bass in Louisiana hit em
The blakemore roadrunner with Marabou hair is hard to beat too.
Work great for trout too!
I fish the Panther Martin 1/4 oz inline spinners, same deal, these things catch anything from large mouth to crappies to pickerel….though I haven't used the Rooster Tail as much lately….
Randy do not tell anybody but here in Texas I catch plenty of largemouth bass with a 1/16 oz rooster tail of which the biggest being five pounds. Most of the time they run abut two to three pounds in the ponds and creeks I fish here in Houston. Keep up the great content
Caught my first pre spawn small mouth on a Jake Spina lure. It was a real toad, in a river. They were coralling trout near spawning ground.
I recently picked up a handful of Mepps Bronze Slammers thanks to Matt Stefan
Rooster tails are hard to beat!
Been enjoying your videos on the bettlespin,Rapala and now the rooster tail .these lures are great for beginners and anglers like me who fish for fun
It’s a great lure to tie on for young fishermen. It will literally catch any fish in your lake!
They catch Largies too! Pond and fish living in current love rooster tails. The Meeps ones are my favorite
Rooster tails on Lake of the Ozarks in late fall for whites and hybrids for 40 years.Bang. Hard bait to tune.
Don't forget the roadunner
I use em on spotted bass lakes every time I see one brake the water I pick that thing up it’s about 7 out 10 on a strike
I love throwing an inline spinner for largemouth and smallies. Look up the Mepps Bronze Slammer inline spinner. It's fairly new and will catch them.
I recently bought a 1 oz Roostertail, white with black spots. I want to see what happens with it in the saltwater but I should try it for bass in Lake Norman and local ponds. I caught 3 bass on smaller Roostertails in a pond, so hopefully the big one will get bigger bass.
What if I told you those two types of gish are easy and there's a better way? What if I told you that's not the best trout lure for bass? I guess I'm a fake and a legend in my own mind. I can assure you these pros will get handled with relative ease whether you believe it or not.
I love using Roster Tails. I use other inline spinners. They good late summer.
Between this and yesterday's beetlespin video, you're really giving up the real juice this week!
There are few things more enjoyable in life than grabbing a light spinning rod, tying on a Roster Tail, and taking off hiking/wading down one of our beautiful Ozark streams.
Caught 5 bass 10 panfish and 2 catfish in 2 hours on a lake with a rooster tail
There is a spinner bait made by Warden lures it’s fun to fish an they catch trout ,Perch, bass ,salmon ,catch everything that wants to bite.never bought one that doesn’t catch fish
I’m 67 years young, as a kid can remember using Zebco 33 rell and rod with a swivel, and a rooster tail. Dad be in front running trolll motor and me in back. Learned to throw behind the boat towards the shore to make sure it would spin. Always caught fish.
Channel cat like them too haha
Literally just packed a day box for a reservoir that’s hike in only from the bank and threw a few of these in. It’s a smallmouth/trout lake up here in the north. Might put some time into this
Used to send Mepps squirrel tails from fall hunt. They would send me lures!!! Don’t know if they still do it?
Appreciate all your insights Randy. Can confirm that spinners will tear it up on smallmouth.
I couldn't even get them to hit a rooster tail or a beetle spin today. After throwing what I normally catch bass on i tried them for the last 30 minutes. Wasn't in the cards today lol.
Hey Randy, I fish a lot of ponds and small lakes from the bank, and I use a #4 and #5 Mepps in-line spinner and the largemouth eat it up.
Randy maybe you do on the water video of how to drain a duck pond the proper way hah

A friend of mine fished with a local pro at our local lake. The pro threw a heavy version of the Rooster tail in 3/4 or 1 oz. Slow rolled it deep in clear winter water. He had a good catch. In many ways the big Rooster Tail looks like a spy bait almost.
It has been a while since I used a Rooster tail. If my memory is correct you need a swivel snap to keep the line twist away.
Can't go wrong with a beetle spin or a rooster tail .old school lures that work all the time
It is my go to during shad spawn or when I find schooling fish. Caught fish a rooster tail from Ga to the Carolinas always have it tied on
Everytime me and my wife go fishing that's what I put on for her to throw because it's easy for her to cast and all she has to do is reel.. and over the last couple of years she would rather fish that bait most times and then other baits, she's even incorporate a own retrieves and we fish on Logan Martin which as you know is a big coosa River spotted Bass Lake and she smashes them on the rooster tail! She throws it on a 7-2 medium spinning rod so she can get it way out there and she's even Incorporated her own different retrieves and literally smashes them.. as a matter of fact we finish the tournament last weekend and she culled two of our fish using a rooster tail.
I still have some of those. They are great for small mouth in the creek.
Great for kids, will catch everything in the lake, and beetle spins. My daughter always uses Bloody Mary beetle spins
Rooster tail and Mepps in-line spinners were some of my first lures. I still catch smallies on the Mepps Agalia on the Potomac, Susquehanna rivers and Raystown lake. Great lures for the kids to fish with.
The Rooster Tail is an unsung and untold bass lure ! Love ‘em, cranking in the rocks and gravel. Thanks Randy !
Take it to the Flint River in GA. Chartreuse with a gold blade. You will smoke the large mouth, spots, and shoal bass.
The rooster tail is the 1st artificial lure I caught a fish on……..back to the basics.
