Fluke Rigging Tricks to Catch Bass Shallow or Deep

Learn how to use a soft jerkbait as a topwater, a mid-depth jerkbait, and a deep bait without adding any weight. Matt demonstrates how to adjust hooks and hook placement to get a variety of actions out of a fluke. If you’re looking for a single “do everything” bait this Spring, look no further than the fluke.

The Super Fluke is in every angler’s arsenal. Some use it as a Carolina rig bait, others as a stick bait, still others use it as a topwater. Today Matt explains some quick hook and bait modifications that will open doors to completely different ways to fish the Fluke. If you’ve been using the bait with a single-use approach, its time to learn what you’ve been missing!

Below is a breakdown of the baits, colors, and hook options that Matt recommends for fishing Flukes and other soft jerkbaits in the Spring and Summer.

  1. Tried using flukes. Cant get them to cast far enough. Tried on 3 of my different rods. From med to med/heavy. Even tried on a spnining rod(just caused line twist). Idk what's the deal is. Might buy some bottom weighted EWG hooks.

  2. I've fished my whole life but never really done any bass fishing specifically. Went out this morning seeing a lot of top water action and just happened to have a super fluke tied up so I tossed it out there and had an 8 pound striper smash it almost immediately. Watching your channel has been costing me a lot of money the last couple days but I definitely have the bug now!!

  3. I like TacticalBassin'. These guys remind me of the folks that taught me bass fishing years ago, as they say almost exactly the same things. I guess this game really doesn't change that much. I'm so glad I had such good teachers, and that these guys are available for everyone today.

  4. Went out today in Northwest Wisconsin after a mild rain storm 75 degree water bluebird sky wind 5mph and slowed to dead calm. Fishing 5 foot depth over weeds. One after another they hit my fluke like it was cocaine. I also boated a 27” Pike. Every time they hit on the dead pause. I used Flukes that were Zoom, and Generic Store Brand. I was running out of them. Color, Brand, or size did not matter. I only used a EWG 2/0 hook. I boated 17 LM Bass in 3 hours. Sometimes it was stalled and sometimes as soon as it hit the water they were on it like a bad drug habit. An Awesome Day I will never forget.

  5. Incredible video. Been sleeping on the flukes thinking I wasn’t light enough to fish them. And I Texas rig everything. Really been missing out on this thanks!

  6. I am hooked on your videos Matt! I love your approach and presentations polished off with the enthusiasm man! Can you send me any links that would be more applicable to fishing stained water like Logan Martin Lake?

  7. your knowledge is very good, however you are much to hyper in your presentation and demonstrations, there is really no need to act so intense and bounce all over the place, its very distracting and makes me dizzy.

  8. Is there a difference in action between the Zodias and the Xpride? I own the 7'2" MH Xpride,I noticed TB recommends the Zodias over the Xpride when talking moving baits, Flukes, Spinnerbaits etc.

  11. Great video…I love these high quality tips and tricks. I started to use flukes not too long ago and immediately got into some action going. Can I futher modify the nose hook style with a small split shot a few inches from the fluke or adding a nail weight into the head of the fish respectively? Or will these modification of the nose hook rig kill the "fluke" action? Appreciate your thoughts on that. Keep up the good work!

  12. I stopped using the fluke for a while and been doing a lot of bottom fishing. Switched to flukes a few weeks ago and Bass can't seem to get enough of them.

It's an amazing lure. I've noticed Bass annihilate the flukes when they make splashes on the top. Drives them crazy.

I have to mention when I started using flukes again I forgot to use the lighter weight EWG hook. How I managed to make it a top water still baffles me. Bass love those splashes at the top. The little tail pushing water everywhere drives them nuts.

Thanks so much for this video TB.

  13. Thank you sir for the great info. I watched a ton of your videos and I find them very helpful and detaied for a new angler like myself. Is there a way you could create a bass calendar with a list of what baits and fishing style needed (deep, shallow, surface…etc.) I know bass acts and feed differently each period and I have not mastered that. Thanks a lot.

  14. Kist watched the clip again. Awesome advice as always. I use your methods here in South Africa and it made me and my son better bass anglers for sure! Thanks again for one of the very best fishing channels. Tight lines.
