Fishing With The OKUMA CELILO Ultralight Rod! [First Impressions]

I have heard a lot of good things about this budget-friendly ultralight fishing rod so I decided to pick one up for myself. In today’s video, I catch a bunch of fish on my new Okuma Celilo 6’6 ultralight & share my honest opinion on how good this rod is for ultralight fishing. Stay tuned because I plan to do more ultralight rod videos in the future! Many of you ask me for ultralight rod suggestions so I wanted to keep experimenting and learning about the various options out there. If you ever have a suggestion for a rod to pick up and review, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Overall, the Okuma Celilo is one of the cheapest rods out there for ultralight fishing. I was not sure what to expect, but after several fish, I determined that it is a very solid setup for the price! It certainly performs better than I expected it to. It is pretty “whippy” but not so much that I can’t detect bites. I was able to cast a light 1/64oz Mule Jig plenty far as well. The components are clearly low quality but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad. It simply means that they are not intended for “high performance” fishing usage. Based on all of the reviews and my discussions with other anglers, this rod will last the test of time. I think you can’t go wrong if you are looking for a rod that gets you on the water and you don’t necessarily care about the aesthetics/appearance of your equipment.

The next rod I will be doing a video on is the Fenwick Eagle. This rod is a bit higher price than the Okuma Celilo so you get a bit more quality built in. Stay tuned for that video 🙂

  1. I would say the reason that rod feels noodly is because of the cheap, bulky guides. If they were lighter weight guides there would be less weight to make it flop around out towards the tip.

  2. With bass on the beds, it is the male that makes the nest, and guards it. The female shows up just long enough to lay the eggs and then she’s out. The male stays and guards them until they hatch.

  3. I absolutely love this rod. I’ve used it in salt water and can handle big fish without worry of snapping. I’ve caught a 16 inch snook on it. Some big grunts. This rod can handle big fish and heavy weights. All around amazing rod.

  4. I have a 6’0” Celilo UL that I love. Mine is quite a bit less whippy than your 6 foot six version and I would say is comparable to a Saint Croix Premier ultralight in fast action. I’ve caught several hundred trout on mine, and had no problems landing a nice heavy 17 inch brown trout with it. I have found that I can cast more accurately with this rod than with any other light or ultralight rod I have tried, I would say an average of a foot closer to my exact target than with other rods.

Two years ago, I was throwing a crappie rig off a dock at dusk, trying to catch a couple panfish when a genuinely huge smallmouth smashed it. It was by far the largest smallmouth bass I’ve ever seen in person or even in any videos, well over 20 inches. It jumped four times so I could see it out of the water and I’m guessing it was at least 7-8 pounds. I was so astonished to have it on that I didn’t even think to loosen my drag, until it was too late. After one more big jump, it snapped my 5 pound mono line. The rod was bent over quite a bit, but did not seem massively stressed. If I had been quicker thinking that night and had loosened my drag, I am pretty sure I could have landed that fish, albeit pulling it up onto the beach with the rod parallel to the water; no way could I have lifted that fish up with the rod.

  5. Second day out using the 5'6" today. Caught nothing over 6 oz or so. Had a buddy standing behind me on the cast where I broke the tip off. He said it didn't snag his rod or the bush, so it just snapped on the cast.

  6. Just bought a Okuma Cellilo 6'6" Ultra Lite. Paired it with a small Shimano spinning reel. I took it to a small mountain lake and caught a boatload of 12 to 14 inch trout. I am so happy with this rod and reel! I could feel every little tap on the line. It was a blast!

  7. Really enjoying your UL Vids. I'm a recent convert. Just got a Celilo 8"6" rod this week. I have a Helios SX20 that I'm going to try on it. I also picked up a Shimano super cheap FX UL 5"6" rod on the Amazon for less than $15 last week. I have a Shimano Sahara 1000 on it. What got me started was my wife got me a St Croix Premier UL 5"6" rod & Shimano Sahara UL 1000 Rear Drag for Christmas last year. I love my UL's!!!!! I'm disabled and the local city park ponds are about all I get to fish……..they're loaded with perfect size UL fish. There is a Trout stocked State Park reasonably close that is fairly ADA Accessible………..love catching those little Rainbows!

  8. so far it's my favourite UL rod. I have the exact same one and it is awesome for flicking around the lures that i use all the time. good power against decently sized fish too

  9. Definitely one of my favorite rods right now. It’s my go to right before my phenix elixir. Maybe that’s because I wouldn’t care if this one broke 🤔🫣but still 🎣

  10. Of budget equipment with quality for the money, about a year and a half ago I got the Shakespeare micro combo, and it’s lasted me well! Caught me some nice panfish, catfish, drum, bass, chain pickerel and crappie, all without a problem 👀! Even bluegill on it are wonderful fighters, so those catfish and drum gave me a heck of a fight 😅

  11. Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

  12. The Okuma rods are fantastic. I started with Okuma fly rods and reels years ago. The Okuma SLV and Crisium fly rods are my favorite. I just started spin fishing a few years ago. The Okuma Celilo is the best value. I have the 4'6" the 5' and the 6'. I just ordered the 7' and it arrives tomorrow. I usually throw 1/8 oz on the heavy side like mini buzzbaits or micro chatterbait and 3.5" swimbaits but mostly throw 1/32 jigs with soft plastics or 1/16 inline spinners. I run the Daiwa Revros, Regal and Laguna with 6lb braid. Casts a mile with the longer rod. I've caught 18" smallmouth, chain pickerel and 4lb carp. You definitely have to fight longer with these rods as they dont have the backbone to horse anything in but I am never worried about breaking these rods and letting the fish pull that drag is fun.

  13. Awesome! I just bought an Okuma UL combo at Sportsman's Warehouse for $59. It's a 6'6" SCE (Celilo) rod and Aria 1000 spinning reel. Beautiful rod and seems to be just what I wanted in a UL. Got some 4lb PLine to spool up. Can't wait to catch a fish with it!
