Fishing RARE Winter NY Snowstorm – It’s SNOWING OUT – Bass in the Beautiful Snow

Fishing a RARE Sudden NY Winter Snowstorm – YES, It’s SNOWING OUT – Bass in the Beautiful Snow. So cool. Snow these days in lower New York State is a rarity. To fish and catch in a snow storm, is by far far, double, triple, further, and even more more scarce. Be like catching bonefish in the Great South Bay… On a summer day of course. It was a full day. I greased some locks, took a hike, climbed some rocks, made some friends, and did some fishing. I drove to another body of water. Always have a plan C when your fishing. (Even if you don’t gets past plan A.) On the way it started snowing out, and hard! I felt the need to pull over somewhere quick before the snow ceased, but I traversed onward to where and what I had in mind. I was going to fling some flies to finish in dusk. However, I decided to grab the spin rod set up with a grub, it was just ready fast. Sometimes ready fast is the way to go. I did not know how long the snowstorm would last. All I wanted was a fish in the snow. Any fish. That we did! A beautiful largemouth bass! May be a memorable one if these trends keep up. I actually saw a whopper of a bass take a swipe soon after. Fly tackle I would have had him. The snow stopped and railed a beauty of a pickerel some minutes before dark set in.

As I drove back satisfied on the day and all I could think of was snow and bass. The news was on the television when I got in. The newscaster was talking about how we had no snow, how rare snow has become in lower NY this past year, and if we will ever get some snow. I laughed a little inside, but he was right, minus one small rip in time. All with the pleasantry of the fish with fish. Who would believe? If you learn to take pursuits beyond fish, beyond people, beyond thought, and think about YOUR PURSUITS, one will be fishing for life.

  1. Really jealous. I'm fishing through over 4' of ice right now. At least we had a warm snap that knocked the snow down though, now you can drive a truck all over the lake without getting stuck. I built these things that jig your line in the wind, so when its real nasty I usually do pretty good just playing cards in the truck watching the lines do their thing.

  2. Hi Jerry, what a wonderful time to fish. Catching bass in the snow, lipping pickeral omg, meeting Millie What a fun day. I agree with Baldy Fade comment.

  3. Doesn’t get much prettier than that! Snowflakes seemingly rising from below as they fall from above… you’re good at making us feel like we’re there with you! Thanks for transporting us!

  4. Great episode Jerry 👌 😂 of course now I’m gonna feel like a wuss anytime I don’t thumb a pickerel, thanks 😂😂
    Great catches! Beautiful snowy setting!

  5. SNOWFLAKE! Not you Jerry…I was talking to the sky! 😄. Jerry? You're the man: "lipping" a pickerel…ouch! I once lipped a few brown trout. Even with those small teeth I ended up with an infected thumb. Good fishing video as always!

  6. Hey Jerry! Glad to see you’re still out there. Work and idle time have been keeping me away for now but when I’d fish in January-March I loved fishing under overpasses and bridges! Especially when there are plenty of rocks keeping whatever warmth from the sun. Last year when we had the second snow fall I had a great time. I felt crazy for going out in the snow but there I was catching! Caught a bass, some trout and plenty sunfish. Love the simplicity of lures used for fun. Sometimes the waters just bless you when you don’t expect it. Thanks as always and tight lines!!!

  7. I use to put latex gloves on to keep the water from getting into my skin, with wool fingerless gloves over them to keep my hands warm in those cold temps… Stay Strong My Friend, Will

  8. I was thinking for most of the video if you were going to catch a pickerel. Then you did. They are a reliable winter bite, but bring pliers!😉
I have caught trout in snow storms and it's a great time. Very peaceful with those big flakes coming down and even more so when a big brown trout eats you Rapala.
