We got a LOT of rain (4” in a day!), and when you’ve got the next day after a HUGE rainstorm to fish with your kiddos, on the last day before you have to return to work and Courtney returns from Disney, and all of your normal haunts are blown out, what do you do?
You head over to Jersey to a converted quarry, that even with all the runoff, still maintains 10-15’ of visibility, and as a bonus, is loaded with big bass (I caught my on of my biggest Smallmouth ever there). Getting the kiddos up and out the door, and on the water at a location that requires a 1/2 mile cart in isn’t an easy task, but we managed to make it happen (with lots and lots of help from Eli!)… and we were glad that we did!!!!
We had one of our best days there (numbers wise), and while I didn’t connect with any of the huge fish… something unexpected did happen. My son Eli, managed to outfish me! We usually do some informal competition when we’re out, and I generally manage to eek out a win… but Eli’s 19.5” largie put him over the top, and bested his dad.
Seeing him starting to employ different fishing techniques based on what he’s seeing the conditions require, as a fishing dad, makes me so proud. Watching him hoisting big fish, smiling ear to ear is such an awesome thing! On top of that, watching Trinity beginning to master paddling a bigger kayak, and trying to figure out fishing for herself is really the coolest!
