Everglades Canal Fishing | Tamiami Trail Canal

When water levels are down I love fishing these canals in the Everglades. All the fish get pushed into them as there isn’t much water anywhere else. While I didn’t get any peacocks, the couple native sunfish species really made my day. Not too bad of a session on Tamiami Trail in the Everglades.

  1. 6# test IS light tackle in a S. Florida canal! LOL When I started out, years ago, bass fishing, I usually used 12# but now that I'm just fishin' for "whatever bites" I've down-sized to 8#. There's not a ton of lily pads in most of the canals I fish, but lots of that brown shoreline weed/algae, and the fish (esp. the Mayans) all seem to dive/bury into it! I've learned to try and keep them up near the surface and surf them over the top of it, if I can. And I still lose some to the weeds with the 8#.
