Can't always find the Big Bass!

Some days I’ll try all the really good patterns I can think of to no avail! I’ll be in a bad area or I’ll miss the best place to cast or I’ll be using the wrong technique. Today Ronnie Curry, my Ozark hunting and fishing buddy and I team up for some big late fall basin in an central Missouri lake. We’re on the wrong page for all we can catch are small ones but guess what there’s always a new day tomorrow so never give up!

  1. Help!!!!!! Christmas day yesterday, temps in the high 50s and I am sleeping in my chair when in walks my fishing buddy. The winds have dropped down and I accuse him of fishing. He says no but wants to go so I grab a pole and little box and away we go. Only thing different from your conditions is we have no boat and the shore line is about 10 to 15 feet to open water. Throwing a spinner bait or a crank bait means a lure full of moss on every retrieve. I chose a plastic shad while he used a worm. I fished just the opposite of him as he was fiishing quite fast so I am as slow as possible to allow bait to sink but not into the moss. I was the lucky one to catch one nice fish and nothing else.
We fished the west side of the pond as we didn't have a lot of time before sunset. Tell what you think, should we have fished the North side of the pond along the dam instead of the West. As I am sitting here now wouldn;t the winds of the previous days from the South move the warmer water to the North side of the pond? The plastics could go deeper as the dam is on the North side and allow deeper fishing with less moss? I guess sleeping in the recliner didn't help my old brain awaken to fishing as it used to.
I did something 10 or 11 years ago that I haven't been able to do since, that was to fish every month of the year and catch bass in the coldest of waters. I used to throw my plastic out to the ice sheet, bring it back to the edge and just let it drop into the water and sink. I then would fiish as slowly as possible, about 5 -10 minutes on the retrieve. The strike was so light it reminded me of someone just touching me, not pulling just touching enough that I would feel it..
I know you don't like to hear about people taking Bass and eating them, but fish out of 33 degree water is really great eating.

  2. I think I might try out this black rooster tail next time I go out fishing since y'all are going for reaction baits in the winter. Caught one little guy with a Texas rigged brush hog yesterday though surprisingly enough!

  3. All the action makes up for lack of big fish. Some lakes are overpopulated with the little guys it seems. Thanks for bringing us along Roland and Ronnie!
