  1. As for feathering the spool, what works for me is using the finger I hold the line with before casting to help keep the line straight while the spool is unwinding. It's not as secure but it still reduces wind knots. At least for me.

  2. I recently came across these issues with my new open cast fishing rod over the weekend fishing trip, thank you so much for this wonderful and very detailed helpful tutorial 🤗.

  3. When putting line on my reel, I use a pot with a lid, i feed the line through the lid hole and into my rod eyelets and onto the reel, but I use warm, almost hot water in the pot with I reel it in so it forms new memory as I reel it in. Helps every time

  4. I feather the cast with the index finger of my right hand. That works fine up to a size 6000 to 8000.

To do so, I don't pull the line with my index finger to the rod, I place the whole finger on the spool instead. The rest of the cast works as usual. Because my index finger is already hovering just millimeters above the spool after I released the line, it's right there to feather the line whenever I please.

If you have giant hands, that might even work with reel sizes beyond 8000. For me, it's becoming unpractical, though.

  5. Closing your bail with your alternate hand keeps your bail from slamming closed and lengthens your reel life. Also keeping your alternate hand on your spool will most time keep your line from crows nesting

  6. i always wondered why they don’t manufacture fishing line on spools that are closer to the size of a reel. I’m sure there’s some logical manufacturing reason but it just seems like it’d be better for the consumer. There’s probably no incentive for them to do it though because more tangled line = more sales
